Nadim Karanouh

CINEMATOGRAPHER

About me

I was born in Beirut, a city where every street corner tells a story steeped in history. Even as a kid, I knew I wanted to capture those stories through film. I felt a strong pull to venture beyond the familiar. So, in early 2022, I packed up my camera gear, grabbed my guitar case, and moved to San Francisco to pursue an MFA in Cinematography at the Academy of Art University. It was a huge leap—like being a fish out of water—but that feeling pushed me to reshape and refine my creative vision. Without anyone else to rely on, I had to make new connections, figure out the complicated public transportation, and squeeze in some time to learn more about myself as a filmmaker and a person.

Over time, I've worked in a range of roles in filmmaking, each one teaching me something new. Pulling focus has always felt natural to me, but that it felt too easy, so I knew I wanted to challenge myself more. That’s why I stepped into the role of Director of Photography. In the beginning, it was like learning a whole new language—the language of cinema. Every frame, every shadow, revealed something new, and I quickly found myself completely immersed in this world. Whether I was walking down a street in San Francisco, Southern France, or Lebanon, I’d catch myself admiring the way light touched every corner, shaping the environment around me.

Becoming a Director of Photography has allowed me to bring stories to life visually, blending creativity with practicality to capture the director's vision. I’m passionate about the power of images to move people, and my goal not simply to frame a scene, but to highlight the emotions, textures, and rhythms that make each story unique. Right now, I’m focused on expanding my horizons in cinematography by experimenting with new approaches to filming: Experimenting with lighting setups taken from masters of cinematography, trying out unique camera/lens combinations aiming for ground-breaking results that are both creative and true to the story. These experiments help me develop a signature style that reflects who I am as a cinematographer.
